Counselors are ethically bound to provide services within the boundaries of their competence, which has traditionally been determined by one's education, training, and supervised experience. Research, however, shows that these do not ensure skillful or effective practice. The American Counseling Association Codes of Ethics mandate that our work be based upon empirical or scientific foundation. Does the historical definition of competence meet our ethical standards of practice?

Competence has traditionally been determined by one's education, training, and supervised experience. Research, however, shows that these do not ensure skillful or effective practice. Our field is called to give evidence that treatment works but how do we actually do that? As a field we need to do better at ensure our work is useful and beneficial to clients.

  • Participants will understand professional Codes of Ethics related to competence and professional responsibility.
  • Participants will understand how professional competence has historically been defined/measured.
  • Participants will understand the ethical importance of an evidence-based standard for professional competence.
